In this project, we were asked to look at the gait of our team members, and see if we would be able to determine if there was a way we would be able to predict other factors of someones build by just looking at the differences in their gait compared to other people in the group. To do this, we used an application on our phones called "Physics Toolbox Alccelerometer" and attached the phone to the persons body so that the phone would be able to record the gait data. We used duct tape to secure the phone onto the body. From the results, we were able to compare each of the walking and running gaits of each subject and look at how the personal differences could have effected the gait. We created a report on our findings and a presentation to give a simple breakdown of what happened. Our findings are recorded below.
Vocabulary: accelerometer: A device that measures the physical acceleration experienced by an object. dynamicity: In terms of gait analysis, the quantification of variations in kinematic or kinetic parameters within a step. gait: The stride of a human as s/he moves his/her limbs. metric: A quantitative indicator of a characteristic or attribute. model: In technology, a description of observed or predicted behavior of some system, simplified by ignoring certain details. Models allow complex systems to be understood and their behavior predicted. symmetry: In terms of gait analysis, the quantification of differences between left-foot and right-foot steps. variability: In terms of gait analysis, the quantification of fluctuations from one stride to the next.
Conclusion: From our findings, we were able to create a formula that determined height differences between two subjects. We all worked together and looked at the data to see how they were all interconnected. Initially, it was difficult to see how we would be able to determine personal differences with different gaits as peoples running patterns are naturally different. However, through some more tests we were able to come up with two different equations. I think that our group worked well in sharing ideas on how to look at the information, and completing everything on time. I would say that the only difficult part of this project was our time restricts, but otherwise we worked very well together.
